At age eleven, while most kids were fashioning cardboard mansions for their teddy bears, Lauren Nelson was dreaming far bigger.

Her vision? To turn an old camper into a real-life tiny home she could call her own.

Hailing from Attica, New York, Lauren was set on making her summer count especially after the pandemic shuttered nearly all social plans. With time on her hands and ambition in her heart, she stumbled upon unexpected inspiration in the pages of an American Girl doll magazine.

That glossy spread featured a miniature $650 VW bus toy. But instead of pining for the doll-sized version, Lauren flipped the idea on its head.

Her mission became clear: find a real camper for as little money as possible and turn it into something magical.

Reflecting on the moment Lauren shared her idea, her mother, Aimee Nelson, told WKBW, “My husband looked at the price tag and said, ‘That’s ridiculous you could buy a real camper for that.’”

The renovation itself was anything but easy particularly for a pre-teen with minimal hands-on experience in the world of tools, sanding, and sweat equity.

But Lauren was ready to roll up her sleeves and dive in starting with a deep clean of her soon-to-be tiny haven.

Naturally, the renovation wasn’t free and Lauren had to tighten the purse strings once again. She managed to spend roughly $400 on furnishings and décor, carefully curating each piece to match the boho-chic vibe of her cozy little retreat.

Her vision was sparked by episodes of Tiny House Hunters on HGTV, but she didn’t stop there. Lauren dove into research, scrolling through Pinterest boards and piecing together a style that was uniquely her own.

Her tiny home embraces a minimalist aesthetic, draped in a calming palette of black, white, and soft grey accented by the occasional leafy potted plant and a touch of mandala-inspired décor for a hint of soul.

It has all the essentials of a real home an inviting living area, a compact kitchen, a snug four-bed sleeping nook, and even a pint-sized bathroom tucked neatly inside.
