Song Lyrics That Mean Something Wildly Different Than You Thought

All bartenders should play it 10 minutes before close.

The slow strumming and soft piano keys are such a universal indicator that it’s time to settle your tab that I believe they should replace the wildly aggressive “turning on all the lights suddenly at 1:30 AM” move that so many bartenders do.

But the song is really about being born.

Surprisingly, “Closing Time” is actually about the ultimate beginning — being born. Singer Dan Wilson was about to become a father when he wrote the song and imagined his child being bounced out of the womb.

The “I know who I want to take me home” line loses a bit of its power when it’s referencing the woman whose stomach you’ve spent your entire existence within. Of course you want them to take you home. They’re literally the only human being you know exists.

“Harder to Breathe” is pretty objectively the best Maroon 5 song.

Maroon 5 are the kings of writing wedding songs that entice even the shyest of the bride’s cousins onto the dance floor, but “Harder to Breathe” is great even on its own.
