Song Lyrics That Mean Something Wildly Different Than You Thought

Most of Maroon 5’s debut album, Songs About Jane, was about, well, a girl named Jane.

Sometimes a breakup is so powerful you have no choice but to write an entire Platinum-selling album about it. That’s what happened to Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, who wrote every song on the band’s first record about a girl he dated named Jane.

But “Harder to Breathe” was about Maroon 5’s record label.

Apparently, Jane wasn’t a fruitful enough creative well for Maroon 5’s record label, who demanded more songs about Jane to put on Songs About Jane. The pressure to write more inspired Levine to pen “Harder to Breathe.”

Man, this song still slaps. The “Puh-puh-puh-poker face Puh-puh-puh-poker faaace” part still makes me do that weird narrowing of the eyes and head nod thing you do when a song really hooks you.
