The Secret Recipe for Gorgeous Hanging Baskets That Bloom All Season Long
This turned out to be far simpler than I ever imagined. I’ve been going about it entirely the wrong way.
Hanging baskets add a striking visual flourish to any front porch or backyard, delivering bursts of vivid color that stand out beautifully against the walls they adorn.
While they’re easy enough to set up, hanging baskets do come with a few common problems.
Striking the right balance between too little and too much water is a delicate and when winter rolls in, your blooms won’t stand a chance without some degree of protective cover shielding the basket.
Usually, though, anyone can successfully see their flowers bloom in hanging baskets.
In search of fresh hanging basket inspiration? Anderson’s Seed & Garden, Inc. has you covered and then some.
Located in the heart of Utah, this charming shop stops people in their tracks each year with its lush, overflowing baskets and vibrantly alive planters.
Curious about their secret? Mark, a seasoned staff member at the shop, generously unveiled his go-to tips in a YouTube feature created for TheValleyChannel.
Mark says maintaining hanging baskets is pretty easy, you just have to be consistent.
The hanging baskets flanking Mark’s storefront are modest 12-inch containers surprisingly compact for supporting such exuberant growth.
As Mark points out, scorching summer heat makes it a real challenge to revive parched soil. When it dries out, it contracts and pulls away from the pot’s interior, allowing water to bypass the roots entirely and spill straight through the bottom.
To make sure that water penetrates the soil, he uses a product called AqueDuct.

AqueDuct functions as a wetting agent essentially, it helps the soil retain a greater volume of moisture. While this particular brand does the trick, there’s a wide array of similar moisture-holding agents available on the market.
Mark’s next nugget of wisdom? Opt for a liquid fertilizer enriched with beneficial microorganisms the very foundation for a thriving, compost-like ecosystem in your container.
Mark waters his hanging baskets once every two weeks with his fertilizer of choice.

The introduced microbes typically remain active in the soil for about two weeks after that, a fresh dose is needed to replenish their beneficial effects.
In addition to liquid fertilizer, Mark uses several other fertilizers at least once or twice a week.

The video proved insanely popular, with more than 2 million views to this date.
Over 1,000 viewers chimed in beneath the video, many expressing gratitude for Mark’s insightful guidance.
One grateful commenter shared:

Another viewer remarked:
“It’s astonishing how much knowledge this gentleman packed into such a short segment… wow, truly grateful for this video.”
While a few commenters suggested that Mark might be promoting products, it’s worth noting you’re under no obligation to follow his exact recommendations if they’re not your cup of tea.
