Song Lyrics That Mean Something Wildly Different Than You Thought

Here’s another Beatles song to dissect: “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.”

Picture myself in a boat on a river? Don’t mind if I do! “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” has a joyful-yet-still-psychedelic vibe that has inspired (and weirded-out) generations.

A lot of folks have pointed out that the title is an acronym.

The seemingly nonsensical lyrics combined with the fact that “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” could stand for “LSD” suggest the song is about a drug trip, and that’s pretty much been the conventional wisdom vis a vis the song’s meaning since it was released in 1967.

But unlike every other song we’ve talked about, “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” has a much less complicated meaning.

John Lennon’s three-year-old son drew his friend Lucy and told his dad that she was “in the sky with diamonds.” And John Lennon just liked it! That’s it! That’s the whole story!

You have to imagine it burned Lennon’s butt that a sweet little thing his baby boy did became synonymous with drug trips, but that’s what the Beatles get for hiding little secret meanings in all their songs.

Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” is a real jam.

And it’s another great karaoke candidate. Do you have a friend who is too anxious to get up and sing in front of a bunch of strangers? Bring them up to sing the “turn around bright eyes” part while you do the rest of the heavy lifting.
